notes:
Weddell made his voyages as captain of the Jane (a refitted American ship) in search of new sealing grounds. His 1822-24 voyage was his third to the Antarctic area. He was accompanied by the ship Beaufoy commanded by Matthew Brisbane. Since seals were scarce, both ships sailed farther south in hopes of finding better grounds. In an unusually ice-free year, they reached latitude 74o 15' S, a feat not repeated until 1967.Repeatedly running up against ice had made repairs to the Jane necessary, and this was the first coast at which an examination of the ship could be made.Image placed horizontally on page.
