Rev. Coke was the superintendent of the Methodist missions in the West Indies and was known as Father of the Methodist missions. Coke made his first mission to the West Indies in 1786 and continued making further visits until 1793. He advocated the abolition of slavery and this chapel was set on fire by pro-slavery mobs in 1797, but the building was saved from destruction.
