This head shows the Brazilian chief or king, Quoniambec or Cunhambebe (called Konyan Bebe by Hans Staden), who was elected chief of the Tamoyo Confereration of native tribes and waged war against the Portuguese until 1567.Bulwer, a pioneer in the education of the deaf, writes here about cosmetic alterations of the human body and makes comparisons between contemporary fashions and those of savage and exotic people.
