notes:
George Lowther and his crew roamed the Caribbean for several years. In January 1722, the pirates and their four vessels put into Port Mayo to careen. Vunerable because their boats were out of water having their bottoms scraped, they were attacked by natives and forced to leave their ships, along with much of their plunder. This work is often attributed to Defoe based on textual relationship to works of Defoe's proven authorship together with supporting external evidence. It also has also been attributed to Charles Johnson.
