This portrait of Decatur was engraved after a painting by Gilbert Stuart. Renowned for his courageous conquest of Tripoli in 1804, Decatur garnered further fame by capturing the British frigate, Macedonian, in 1812 and by brokering a peace treaty with Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli in 1815.
