The rulers of the Quiché or Maya empire in Guatemala were conquered by the Spanish under Pedro de Alvarado in 1524.Ferdinand VII ascended to the Spanish throne in 1808 after his father's forced abdication. He reigned for a few months before he was made prisoner by Napoleon Bonaparte for five years. In 1813, he was restored to the throne and remained king until 1833.
