Hercules was said to have vanquished the Lernaean Hydra by following his mentor's advice to conquer by surrendering.Francisco Antonio de Fuentes y Guzman wrote Historia de Guatemala, an important history of the area.Ferdinand VII ascended to the Spanish throne in 1808 after his father's forced abdication. He reigned for a few months before he was made prisoner by Napoleon Bonaparte for five years. In 1813, he was restored to the throne and remained king until 1833. This plate is a detail from the larger engraving of a catafalque erected in Guatemala.Image placed horizontally on page.
