notes:
The native Americans who had captured Hennepin and his companions fought over the Europeans' possessions, and especially the rolls of tobacco from Martinique. They also seized Hennepin's religious articles such as a chalice (which shone so much they were afraid of it) and a chasuble. The little chest full of papers did not interest them, once it was opened. The first part of this book is translated from Benzoni, Historia del mondo nuovo, Venice, 1565 (first two voyages). The second part is Louis Hennepin, Nouvelle decouverte, Utrecht, 1697. Image title taken from chapter title.
