notes:
Text describes the author's descent down part of a mountain being carried on the back of a native American servant on the way to Las Juntas, Colombia. The author faced the 2,000-foot drop while his bearer searched for footholds. Cochrane (b. 1796) served in the Napoleonic wars. After leaving the Navy he went to Colombia in hopes of mining copper and lowering the number of deaths in the pearl fisheries. He was perhaps the first to describe native Americans' use of the secretions from frog skin as a poison. When mining proved impracticable, he returned to Britain where he claimed to be a wandering Spanish minstrel, calling himself Jean de Vega. In 1830 he took out a patent in France on a machine for spinning cashmere and built a mill in Glasgow for spinning that wool which was new to Europe. These volumes are preceded by a dedication to Simón Bolívar.
