Barthélemy (1747?-1830), a statesman, was elected to the Directory in 1797, arrested in the coup of 18 Fructidor (September 4, 1797), and deported to French Guiana. He escaped, returned to France, supported Napoleon and then the Bourbons. This journal recounts the story of the deportation, sufferings, and escape of Barthélemy, Ramel, Pichegru, Willot, Marbois, and La Rue.
