notes:
Text discusses how the Spanish attacked the nobles in the court of Moctezuma [Montezuma] II who were dancing the mitote for their imprisoned emperor, leaving not one alive. One of the first to vilify the Spanish as cruel exploiters of the Indians, Bartolomé de las Casas, the bishop of Chiapas, vehemently condemned maltreatment of the Indians. His writings enforced an enduring set of of ideas known as the Black Legend and sanctioned Protestant retaliation against Catholic countries, especially Spain.
