Yuquot, site of the first contact between Europeans and native Americans in present-day British Columbia, was the summer home of chief Maquinna and the Mowachacht peoples and was known as Nootka to Europeans. Vancouver explored the coast of present-day British Columbia, proving that there was no Northwest Passage at that latitude, and was instrumental in negotiations with the Spanish on possession of Nootka.
