notes:
Vancouver named Port Townshend, or present-day Port Townsend, for George Townshend, a British general who served with the force that took Quebec from the French in 1759. Vancouver explored the coast of present-day British Columbia, proving that there was no Northwest Passage at that latitude, and was instrumental in negotiations with the Spanish on possession of Nootka.
