notes:
The Dutch attempted to make the western route to China through the Strait of Magellan in 1598 under the leadership of General Jacques Mahu and Vice-Admiral Simon de Cordes. The expedition was ill-starred (100 out of 500 men died on the voyage); this illustration shows the starving Dutch mariners killing penguins for food.
