Description:
Myths and symbols of various world religions. The image (upper right, labeled 1) shows the Iroquois fable of the origin of man. The first man steps upon a turtle's back, directed by God in the clouds. The other symbols and figures relate to Roman, Egyptian, Hindu, and Chinese religions.

Vishnu seated on a turtle from India. 6. Chinese figure of a dragon with turtle back carrying the world. Compiled and translated from several sources by Johann Friedrich Schröter, with a preface by Siegmund Jakob Baumgarten. Schröter was secretary to the Privy Council of Magdeburg and had served for some years as a missionary in Canada.
