Text relates that the Spanish of Montevideo lived in great indolence. This voyage was undertaken by Louis de Bougainville at his own expense to found a French colony in the islands (named by him in honor of French seamen from St. Malo), presently known as the Falkland Islands [or Islas Malvinas]. The Spanish objected to the colony and the French later surrendered the land to Spain. Pernety, who traveled with the expedition, was a Benedictine monk.
