notes:
Text describes the scene in which European travelers come to a settlement of the Cabocles, a tribe that lives near San Pedro de Canta-Gallo in the province of Rio de Janeiro. The head man sits on the ground surrounded by the young men of the village. The women, who are preparing food, are surprised by the visitors and sit modestly on the ground. In the background is a rancho, a communal cabin that the villagers all live in. Image placed horizontally on page. Lithographer is probably Charles Etienne Pierre Motte (French printmaker and draftsman, 1785-1836).
