Artifacts of native Americans of Guiana; equipment to process roucou or annatto. Includes the mortar in which roucou is ground, pestles or grinding sticks, skimmer or ladle, sieve for sifting the powder, furnace or oven for heating the spice. Also includes an illustration of the seed pod of the annatto plant with seeds next to it.

notes:
Annatto, Bixa orellana, was used to control fevers, dysentry, and kidney diseases, and was used by natives of Central America as war paint. A powder is made from the seeds of the fruit of the shrub. Barrère, "medecin-botantiste" to the French king, was the first European to write about Guiana. He included ethnographic and economic information in this book, along with information on the flora and fauna.
