notes:
All of Le Moyne's original watercolors of Florida have been lost except for one painting which is now in the collection of the New York Public Library. Because de Bry's engraving of the same subject is so similar to Le Moyne's painting, it has been assumed that de Bry's engravings closely resemble Le Moyne's. The Timacua [Timucua] that Le Moyne painted are now extinct and his paintings alone document them. The text describes René de Laudonnière's return to Florida during his second voyage. He was escorted to a site by the chief of the native Americans, Athore, who showed him a column which the natives worshipped as an idol. Athore is described as being taller than even the tallest of the French. This work was published by Theodor de Bry from manuscript notes and drawings made by Jacques le Moyne de Morgues, an illustrator and explorer, who sailed with René de Laudonnière on the 1564 Huguenot expedition to Florida. Laudonnière set up Fort Caroline on the St. John's River in 1564, but the settlement was destroyed by the Spanish army under Pedro Menendez de Aviles. Theodor de Bry's America. Pt. 2. German.
