notes:
Wooster, a brigadier general in the Continental army, led Connecticut troops in the Quebec campaign, briefly commanding American forces at Quebec after the death of Richard Montgomery in 1775. Another mezzotint very similar to this is in the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection, Brown University, and purports to be a portrait of Sir William Howe, Commander in Chief of the British forces in America. Cresswell attributes this mezzotint to R. Purcell who produced engravings under the pseudonym of C. Corbutt; however, the Richard Purcell who engraved under the name, Charles Corbutt, died in 1766. This was one of a series of prints made to supply the British public with (fictitious) portraits of American military leaders. This print was removed from Washington Irving, Life of Washington, VII (according to a notation on the verso of the print), and is held separately.
