notes:
Rogers, a noted Indian scout, formed Rogers' Rangers, a fighting unit which took part in General James Wolfe's expedition against Quebec and in the Montreal campaign of 1760. George Washington refused Rogers' offer of help during the Revolutionary War because he feared Rogers might be a loyalist spy. The refusal caused Rogers to openly join the British and to fight against the colonial forces. Cresswell attributes this mezzotint to R. Purcell who produced engravings under the pseudonym of C. Corbutt; however, the Richard Purcell who engraved under the name, Charles Corbutt, died in 1766. This was one of a series of prints made to supply the British public with (fictitious) portraits of American military leaders.
