notes:
Pride of place for circumnavigation is given to Schouten, along with Magellan. The map marks Schouten's voyage with Isaac LeMaire in 1615; Schouten's discovery of the way round Cape Horn, named after the town of Hoorn from which he came, was kept secret by the Dutch until the middle of 1618, making this map one of the earliest to show his journey. This plate also appears on the title page. This work is translated from Willem Corneliszoon Schouten, Journal ofte beschryvinghe van de wonderlicke reyse, Frankfurt a. M., 1619. The appendix is translated from Joris van Spilbergen, Oost en West-Indische spiegel, Leiden, 1619. Theodor de Bry's America. Pt. 11. Latin.
