notes:
Meares arrived in Yuquot on Nootka Sound in May 1788 seeking to exploit the rich sea otter fur trade. He left Chinese artisans to build a dwelling and the sloop, North West America, the first of its kind to be built on that coast. Because the Spanish had claimed the entire Pacific Northwest coast as part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, this action by Meares precipitated a controversy which almost brought Spain and England to war and which took five years to settle. The North West America was seized by the Spanish as security for money owed by Meare's company. An agreement signed at Madrid on January 11, 1794, granted free access to Nootka by both nations and the Spanish evacuated the port in April 1795.Image placed horizontally on page.Artist is probably Conrad Martin Metz, 1755-1827.
