notes:
Given during treaties of peace, wampum belts could be from 60 to 90 centimeters long and 7 to 15 centimeters wide. The design features--its color, shape, length, and pattern combinations--conveyed a meaning. Also used as currency, wampum was the principle medium of exchange in northeastern North America before the arrival of Europeans.
