notes:
A French privateer, attracted by the pearl fisheries of Cubagua, in present-day Venezuela, was driven away by native Americans who were told that the French were sodomites. The native Americans attacked the French ships and prevented them from landing then or later, insuring that the Spanish were able to keep their monopoly of the pearl industry until they had completely depleted it.This work was published by Theodor de Bry and is derived from the second part of Girolamo Benzoni, Historia del mondo nuovo, Venice, 1565. Theodor de Bry's America. Pt. 5. Latin. Imprint information from colophon.
