notes:
The site of the Upper Ferry on the Schuylkill River was probably not too far from the present-day Spring Garden Bridge in Philadelphia. This pontoon bridge was replaced in 1812 by a single arch bridge of 340 feet, designed by Lewis Wernwag; it was then perhaps the second largest single-arch span bridge in the world.
