notes:
The governor of Cartagena, Alonso de Ojeda, launched a surprise attack in retaliation for the loss of his soldiers who were killed by native Americans on an earlier expedition to the interior of present-day Colombia to search for gold. Ojeda was aided by the arrival of Diego de Nicuesa's fleet. The settlement was burned and all its inhabitants were captured or killed. This work was published by Theodor de Bry and is derived from the first part of Girolamo Benzoni, Historia del mondo nuovo, Venice, 1565. Theodor de Bry's America. Pt. 4. Latin.
