The text describes the building of this wooden bridge, the first to link Boston and Charlestown and, at that time, the longest in the United States. The Legislature of Massachusetts passed an act on March 9, 1785, incorporating the proprietors of the Charles River Bridge for the purpose of building a toll passenger bridge over the Charles River which was completed in June 1786. Image placed horizontally on page.
