notes:
Boston Light on Little Brewster Island, the first lighthouse constructed in the New World (completed in 1716), was a vital part of the Revolutionary struggle in Boston from 1775 to 1776. The colonials attempted to burn it down in an effort to deter British shipping and navy. Americans, under the command of Major Benjamin Tupper, succeeded in removing the light from the harbor in July 1775. The light was destroyed by the British as they abandoned Boston harbor in 1776. Governor John Hancock oversaw the rebuilding of the light, completed in 1783. It was the last lighthouse in the United States to be automated (in April 1998). Image placed horizontally on page.
