notes:
The text describes the fruit and seeds of the cochineal plant which is used for making dye in Mexico. In reality, cochineal is made from the bodies of a scale insect which feeds on prickly pear (opuntia) cactus. The Spanish government, anxious to keep a monopoly on this valuable dye, encouraged misinformation on the production of cochineal. The manuscript, attributed to Champlain, describes his voyage sailing with a Spanish fleet to the Caribbean in 1599 to 1600.
