notes:
The Library Company of Philadelphia, founded by Benjamin Franklin and friends in 1731, is the oldest subscription library in the country. Library Hall, home of the Library between 1790 and 1880, was built from designs by William Thornton. It was demolished in 1884, but later reconstructed and is presently used as the library of the American Philosophical Society. Surgeon's Hall was an early building of the School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania.
