The commonwealth of Pennsylvania began to build this mansion in 1792 while Washington was president. It was completed in 1797, but John Adams declined to live in it. It was used by the University of Pennsylvania until 1829 when it was demolished. The Alms House and House of Employment, shown in Plate 25, can be seen in the distance.
