notes:
When General John Burgoyne surrendered after the Battle of Saratoga, his troops (known as the Convention Army) were marched to Boston to be held until they could be exchanged. Not wishing to release their prisoners to the British (thereby freeing up more troops to be deployed against the colonies), the Americans, as a delaying tactic, transferred the prisoners to Albemarle Barracks near Charlottesville, Virginia, where they bivouacked until they were exchanged into British hands in 1779.
