notes:
Benjamin Church, 1639-1718, led English troops against the native population during King Philip's War, the bloodiest war per capita in American history, which ended when Church captured King Philip (or Metacom) who was chief of the Wampanoag. Described as a "grotesque effigy of what Revere supposed the celebrated Indian chief looked like," this portrait was probably taken from the engraved portrait of Ho Nee Yeath Tan No Row (see 04507-1). The native Americans in the background seem to have been taken from Benjamin West's engraving of Indians giving a Talk to Colonel Bouquet (see 09110-1) (probably copied directly from a print published in the Court Miscellany ..., Sept. 1766).
