This animal has been identified as a great auk, a flightless bird which lived in Newfoundland and other islands off the coast of Canada, Norway, Scotland and Iceland, but which is now extinct. The name, penquin, was originally applied to the great auk and afterward applied to birds of the Spheniscidae family which are of no relation to the great auk.
