notes:
In 1614 the Dutch East India Company and the States-General commissioned Joris van Spilbergen to sail to the Moluccas via the Strait of Magellan. Six heavily-armed ships and about 700 men left the Netherlands on a voyage to circumnavigate the world; one ship deserted before the Strait was passed. The Dutch were surprisingly given a friendly welcome and supplies by the inhabitants of Acapulco. The fleet then sailed west to the Moluccas which it reached in March 1616.On July 17, 1615, the Dutch ships, which had fewer armed soldiers but twice as many big guns, overcame the defending Spanish fleet, the armadilla, which consisted of two crown galleons supported by five conscripted merchant ships.Callao, the port city of Lima, was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1749.
