notes:
Hédouville was an agent for the French revolutionary government. His mission was to exacerbate rivalry between Toussaint Louverture and André Rigaud and thus ease Louverture out of power. Hédouville was forced to leave Haiti in 1798. Toussaint Louverture, originally named François Dominique Toussaint (ca. 1743-1803), led the rebellion of slaves against the Spanish and French rulers of the island of Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and Santo Domingo), successfully fought for the abolition of slavery, and briefly established a black-governed French protectorate. There are no existing portraits of Toussaint Louverture drawn from the life.
