notes:
French Capuchins attempted to establish a mission in Maranhão in northern Brazil in 1612. Competing both with the Jesuits and the Portuguese for the conquest of Brazil, the organizers of the mission brought back to France with them six Tupinambas to help raise money and support for the settlement. Claude d'Abbeville's account is the principal source about this early and unsuccessful attempt by the French to establish a foothold in South America.
