notes:
The oldest Baptist church in America, the First Baptist Church was founded in 1638 by Roger Williams. This engraving shows the present building, the third meeting house to be built. At the time of its construction in 1775, it was the largest building project in New England. Many of the construction crew were Boston carpenters and shipwrights out of work because the British had closed Boston's port.
