Ipecacuanha, Cephaelis ipecacuanha, an anti-dysentery drug native to Brazil and long valued as an emetic, was not used in Europe until 1672 when a traveler named Legros brought some of the root to Paris. The name came from the native Brazilian word, i-pe-kaa-guéne, which is said to mean "road-side sick-making plant." The botanical source of ipecacuanha was a subject of great dispute in Europe. No less an authority than Linneas thought Viola ipecacuanha, now sometimes used as a substitute for ipecac but not the true source of it, to be the plant which yielded the true ipecacuanha roots.
