notes:
Cinchona or quinine bark was first documented for its curative effects on malaria in 1638 when the countess of Cinchon, wife of a Peruvian viceroy, was supposed to have been cured of a malarial type fever. Cinchona, one of forty species of trees, was not botanically classified until 1737. Until the seeds were stolen in 1865 and successfully planted in the Dutch East Indies, the tropical forests of northwestern South America were the sole sources of this valuable medicine. Scientific name: Cinchona officinalis.
