notes:
Labat was a Dominican missionary and is supposed to have illustrated this book himself. The anolis lizard can be found from the Carolinas to the Amazon. Gobemouche means fly catcher. "Maboya" among the Taíno and Siboney (of Puerto Rico) native Americans refers to an evil nocturnal deity.
