Manuscript codex. Composed in two hands. Title written on verso of front cover. Double entry account book in the hands of Doctor David Vanderlight and Mary Vanderlight. David Vanderlight, a Dutch immigrant who arrived in Rhode Island by way of Guyana, was principal pharmacist of the town of Providence and husband of Mary Vanderlight, née Brown, daughter of John Brown (1698-1739), and sister of Nicholas, Joseph, John, and Moses Brown. The account includes some of Rhode island's oldest and most prominent familes such as Bowen, Olney, Hopkins, and Tillinghast and indicates what kind of goods and services they were selling, in Vanderlight's case medicines and visits to patients, or buying, including articles of clothing, hay, fabric, sugar, tobacco, and wood. The entires in the account book begin in October 1751 on page 1; the latest date of January 13, 1759 appears on page 91.
