The Nodal brothers were sent by Philip III to explore the Strait of Magellan discovered by Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten. Bartolomé later died when his ship, Nuestra Señora de Atocha, sank in 1622 off the coast of Florida while carrying copper, silver, gold, tobacco, gems, jewels, jewelry, and indigo from Spanish ports in the New World bound for Spain.
