Cartobibliographic notes:
In: Wytfliet, C. Descriptionis Ptolemaicae augmentum sive Occidentis notitia brevi commentario illustrata, et hac secunda editione magna sui parte aucat (Louvain, 1597). The Straits of Magellan are not named on this map as on later editions. Wytfliet's Descriptionis achieved seven editions, and although the title links with Ptolemy, the work involves the history of discovery, geography, natural history and ethnology of the New World, the world unknown to the ancients. Schilder (1976) contends that this map does not support the view that Australia had already been discovered in the 16th century, and asserts that it relates only to the voyages through the Magellan Straits.
