Historical notes:
Showing extraordinary topographical and hydrographical detail, this map was the result of a survey by Charles Blaskowitz, a skilled British military surveyor who was assigned by Samuel Holland in 1764 to chart the coast of Rhode Island. A note on the map asserts it was commissioned by order of the principal farmers on Rhode Island [i.e., Aquidneck Island]; it may have been redrawn in 1777 to detail defensive positions and resold to the British. The British occupying Newport used the chart extensively.
