Historical notes:
Clifford, an Englishman, owned a great sugar plantation left to him by his father. When Surinam was ceded to the Dutch by the Treaty of Breda in 1667, the rights of English property owners were guaranteed to be the same as those of the Dutch. However, the Dutch government privatized the colony, and the new owners harrassed and even condemned Clifford to death. Eventually, he was permitted to leave Surinam, but his plantation was ruined and his fortune diminished. He died in 1737, but his heirs carried forward his appeals for reparation. This book records all phases of the court cases that lasted about fifty years.
