Fort Royal was settled in 1762 by the French who used it as an operation center for their interests in the Caribbean. In 1801 by the decree of Napoleon Bonaparte, the name of Fort Royal was changed to Fort de France.Written by a senior officer with the 35th Regiment (Royal Sussex), this journal was probably the work of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Fletcher. The first eight leaves of this journal have been lost, making identification of the author uncertain, but Fletcher was the only senior officer associated with the regiment at this time who could have written the journal.
