Carver was the first Englishman to undertake an exploration of the west. His purpose was to map the land, to befriend the native Americans, and to discover the Northwest Passage. His journey began in 1766 and, in some ways, was the precursor of the Lewis and Clark expedition; his book was the first popular American travel book. Also attributed tentatively to John Coakley Lettsom, known to be involved with the work at least in the capacity of editor.
