Historical notes:
Benjamin Franklin used this illustration for an article on maritime observations. As Deputy Postmaster General for the American colonies in London, Franklin noted that mail packets sailing westward from England to America took longer than eastward sailing packets. Drawing upon Nantucket whalemen's knowledge, principally that of Timothy Folger, and that of William de Brahm, the Surveyor General for the Southern District of North America, Franklin first drew a map of the stream in 1768. This map published in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society is one of several versions of Franklin's map.
